Making Lemonade

Our daughter, Alex, is recovering from a rather severe bone break (two breaks actually) in her radius (left forearm at the wrist). The injury occurred during field hockey practice and has sidelined her for the remainder of the season. Alex is a senior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY and captain of the field hockey team.

Alex has been accused on many occasions of attempting to make lemonade when life deals her lemons. In fact, Head of School at Sacred Heart (Alex's high school) asked the teachers what Alex was up to when the students erected an Alex's Lemonade stand in the school gym. At the time, several "Alex's" attended Sacred Heart. Still, the Head of School assumed that only one certain Alex would be so bold as to establish a commercial enterprise on school grounds.

Seems Alex continues in the lemonade making business. Despite a very inconvenient setback during her senior season, a season she began with great hopes and aspirations, she has refused to become defeated. Instead, she has chosen to look outward. To ease her own pain she has decided to ease the pain of others.

Until today, Alex was adorned with beautiful and long naturally blond tresses that cascaded down to the middle of her back. No longer. Two thoughts moved Alex to change her looks, 1) long hair is challenging when you have only one hand available for the daily rituals required for proper hair care, and 2) others might be able to put her now bothersome tresses to good use. So, today Alex allowed herself to be clipped and she is donating her shorn plaits to Locks of Love (www.locksoflove.org). Locks of Love is a non-profit organization with a mission to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children.
We are very proud of our daughter. Way to go Alex!
